How to teach the front full: 13 drills, step by step
Teach the front full by first getting a high, straight front layout, then adding the twist with drills on the trampoline, tumble track and floor. These 13 drills build the punch, the arm wrap and the timing of the twist. They suit coaches of women's and men's floor gymnasts who already have a solid front tuck.

Step 1 of 13, free: Front Full - Drill 1
The phases
- Take-off: punch from the floor with a tight body and arms driving up.
- Straight front salto: rotate forward in a stretched body shape.
- Twist initiation: start the twist with a clean arm wrap and head position.
- Landing: stop the twist and open for a controlled landing.
Before you start
The gymnast should have a consistent front tuck with height and be working on a front layout.
Common mistakes
- Twisting before leaving the floor: the gymnast travels sideways and loses height.
- Piking in the air: rotation and twist both slow down.
- Loose arm wrap: the twist is incomplete and the landing is short of a full turn.
- Throwing the head back: the salto loses rotation.
Coaching cues
- Punch up first
- Wrap tight
- Stay long

Frequently asked questions
What should a gymnast learn before a front full?
A high front tuck, a front layout and twisting basics such as a straight jump with full turn. The trampoline is often used to build the twist safely before taking it to floor.
Why does the front full travel sideways?
Often the twist starts on the floor instead of in the air, or one arm pulls before the other. Practising a straight take-off and a symmetrical arm wrap usually helps.
